To put hardwood flooring on our stairs I had to decide what to do with ballusters that were connected to the stair
treads. The existing carpet was just wrapped around the ballusters, which was not an option for the
hardwood.
I decided to rebuild the handrail to include a small wall at the bottom of the ballusters, which left the
construction of the stair treads quite simple.
The ballusters and wall will be painted white. The newell post caps and the handrail are made from the
same wood as the hardwood floors I installed: brazilian cherry, also known as
jatoba.
