The steel I used to make these brackets is 1-1/2" wide by 3/16" thick.

I used an arc welder to fasten the steel together and drilled and counter-sinked holes for mounting to the wood. The oak core for the handrails is 1-3/16" thick by 1-7/8" wide.

The combination of the thick oak and the hefty brackets make the handrails and posts very solid.
